Electricians shock competition in awards

The fast growing Molendinar-headquartered electrical contractors SEQ Electrical has emerged as a contender for the Gold Coast Business of the Year title after snapping up an Emerging Business award.

The company was named as one of the 10 monthly winners at the Gold Coast Business Excellence Awards at a ceremony held at Bruce Lynton BMW.

SEQ, which was co-founded by Matthew O’Brien in a small office in Southport in 2011, now has annual revenues of more than $20 million, employs 115 people nationally and is a major national supplier to NBN Co.

General Manager Matthew Kirk said the company had brought together a team of senior electricians who had worked together previously and they used their existing contacts to build the operation.

He said the company now has a presence in the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Northern NSW and Darwin.

“Our core business is medium to large scale projects and we have been fortunate enough to be involved in quite a number of large projects during the past four years,’’ said Mr Kirk.

"For example, we are now working with NBN Co to help roll out the NBN in the Northern Territory and hope to expand our relationship with them into other States and Territories.”

Some of the other projects the company has been involved with include the upgrade of Defence Force facilities in Darwin, the relocation of the Gold Coast Showgrounds to the Gold Coast Turf Club, the development of the Gold Coast Airport Virgin Lounge and the new Gold Coast Australian Federal Police building.

Mr Kirk said a key difference between SEQ and its competition was that the company provided a service that did not end when construction was completed.

“We like to stay on after the completion of the project to provide ongoing maintenance and care,’’ said Mr Kirk.

“For example after completing a number of construction projects for Qld Airports Ltd at the Gold Coast Airport, we now provide ongoing support and maintenance for their facilities.“

SEQ is now among 60 Gold Coast companies vying for the title of the Gold Coast Business of the Year. The winner will be announced at a gala presentation to be held at Jupiters Hotel and Casino on Saturday, November 29.

Other winners in the October awards included digger and loader manufacturer Kanga Loaders Global, environmental consultants Mark Rigby and Associates, craft beer brewer Burleigh Brewing Company, event management software company Ivvy, coffee equipment and capsule manufacturer Coffee Roasters Australia, bus company Con-X-ion Airport Transfers, industrial hose manufacturer Pacific Hoseflex, flooring company Master Floor Preparers and health retreat Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat.

The awards’ sponsors include City of Gold Coast, Suncorp Bank, Virgin Australia, AusIndustry, OntheNet, Griffith University, Regional Development Australia Gold Coast and Gold Coast Airport.

The major supporters are SMART McCann Worldgroup, Document Solutions Australia, Consulting Hall, Jupiter’s Gold Coast, Regina King Photography, Bruce Lynton BMW, Bond University, KPMG, Dreamweavers and CGC Premiums and Merchandise.

The awards’ media sponsors include the Gold Coast Bulletin, NBN Television, 92.5 Gold FM and 90.9 Sea FM.
