Teams invited to hack something amazing at GovHack Gold Coast

Written on the 6 July 2016 by Gold Coast PR Company Consulting Hall

From 29 to 31 July 2016, the annual GovHack Open Data Competition, held across Australia and New Zealand, will be hosted locally at Griffith University's Red Zone.

Competition Overview
GovHack is a 46 hour open data competition which draws together people from government, industry, academia and the general public to reuse and remix government data in new and innovative ways to benefit our community. It gives participants the chance to create anything with open government data, such as art, jewellery, board games, historic film pieces, data visualisations and of course web apps. The only limit is your imagination.

Now in its sixth year GovHack attracts over 2,000 participants including entrepreneurs, developers, data analysts, engineers, designers, digital media creators, artists, film makers, story tellers, academics, researchers and youth.

Gold Coast Event
This year GovHack Gold Coast will be held at the Red Zone, Griffith University Gold Coast Campus and is generously supported by the City of Gold Coast.

GovHack Gold Coast host, Joshua Holmes, said it was the ideal time to get involved with hackathons and the entrepreneurial spirit.

"With both the City of Gold Coast and Queensland Government committed to open data, innovation, entrepreneurship and digital economies, there is no better time or place to begin the journey into digital disruption and open data hacking," he said.

GovHack invites people from all walks of life to attend, with mentors from industry on hand to help.

"We need people who are business minded, digital creatives, story tellers, data analysts and of course software engineers, amongst others. If you've ever wanted to get involved with something really fun and creative, now's the time. Jump in and see what you can learn."

"The Gold Coast is a hugely diverse and growing regional centre, with tens of thousands of students, millions of tourists and thousands of businesses taking advantage of the area. This is on top of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and growing infrastructure plans. This presents a perfect opportunity for people to come together and hack something amazing."

GovHack Gold Coast in completely free to attend, with all meals and snacks provided, local cash prizes and international trips away to be won.

Not Just For Participants
Of course, if you aren't interested in participating, but still want to help out, we need volunteers across the weekend and are still welcoming sponsors.
